SportFootballLiverpool FCIn this week's Blood Red, Paul Gorst assesses the fall out from Michael Edwards' decision to step away as Fenway Sports Group's CEO of footballA penny for Andoni Iraola's thoughts as he surveys the rapidly changing face of Liverpool's executive team, barely a month into his new job as head coach.Headhunted by sporting director Richard Hughes and appointed just days after Arne Slot was sacked at the end of May, it's unclear how much Iraola knew about his new boss' plans to move to Saudi Arabia.Hughes is expected to become the new sporting director of Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League and it's almost something of an open secret in football at this stage, despite Liverpool's insistence that the director is fully focused on what is a critically important summer transfer window.Hughes will join his good friend and former Bournemouth colleague Simon Francis in the Middle East and the only question left now is when exactly he shuffles off to leave Liverpool in need of a sporting director. The man who has the power to appoint a new sporting director, Michael Edwards, is now also leaving the Fenway fold. He announced on Friday that he is set to walk away after two years as FSG's CEO of football, which was a bespoke role created for the Reds' former transfer guru as they attempted to restructure following Jurgen Klopp's departure.Edwards was viewed as a steady hand on the tiller in the Spring of 2024 as FSG attempted to find a route out of the enormous shadow cast by Klopp and his exit.
It's a testament to how well the club have generally been run that barely 12 months later Liverpool were champions of England for the 20th time. That, as you might expect, was referenced in the statement made by Mike Gordon, the FSG president who is now set to take the reins more tightly once more after having taken a more back seat two years ago.“His return to the organisation saw Liverpool successfully navigate a significant period of transition before securing the club’s historic 20th English league title," Gordon said. As someone once described by Klopp as "the brain behind all the things at Liverpool", his track record is at least impressive.Gordon's relationship with Klopp was famous and while he no longer has to play kingmaker once more at Anfield given Iraola is already in place, the FSG chief's return to the saddle should inspire some confidence at a time when so much uncertainty swirls.FOLLOW OUR LIVERPOOL FC FACEBOOK PAGE!
