Left-back has been something of a problem position for Liverpool during the early months of the season. The Reds made a change in the summer, signing Milos Kerkez and immediately installing him as first choice for Arne Slot. However, Kerkez has had a difficult start. There have been some good performances from the 21-year-old, but some really poor ones as well.As Rousing The Kop exclusively revealed earlier this month, things might be complicated further as Andy Robertson could leave once his contract expires at the end of the season.Kostas Tsimikas could keep his place in the squad after returning from Roma, but the current feeling is that the Greek is also likely to depart next summer. That will leave Slot needing a new option at left-back, and rather than look to the transfer market again, the Dutchman could make use of the Liverpool academy.Photo by Andrew Powell/Liverpool FC via Getty ImagesAlvin Ayman making strides at left-backIf Liverpool are to utilise a left-back from the academy next year, many would assume the likes of Owen Beck, Luke Chambers or Callum Scanlon would be the names in the mix. However, having been initially signed as a central midfielder from Wolves, 18-year-old Alvin Ayman is emerging as a potential option.READ MORE: Why Liverpool talent Trey Nyoni is the perfect loan player for Steven Gerrard at RangersThe youngster starred at left-back during Liverpool’s recent UEFA Youth League win over Galatasaray.Possessor of a wicked left foot, Ayman should have had two assists on the night, but neither Wellity Lucky nor Josh Sonni-Lambie could convert headers laid on a plate for them.Ayman was brought to Liverpool during the same summer as fellow midfielder Trey Nyoni.

After two years of settling in, he looks to be making progress as a player to keep an eye on.Liverpool have been excellent at signing talents from academies across the country of late, and usually do so with an eye on fast-tracking them to the first team. Ayman could well be next on the list.Ayman can be Liverpool’s Myles Lewis-SkellyThere are many examples of midfielders who have been shunted to full-back in order to give them a pathway into the senior team.

Mikel Arteta has deployed the 19-year-old at left-back having seen him come through the Arsenal academy as a midfielder.Lewis-Skelly has become an important member of the Gunners squad since his debut in September 2024, and was already a full England international at just 18.As he looks for a way into the Liverpool squad, Ayman should be holding Lewis-Skelly up as the best possible role model.Although midfield looks stacked for the time being, Slot could soon be needing to call on someone different at left-back. Continue the path he’s on, and Ayman could end up being that option.
