Liverpool’s midfield has been a source of concern in the 2025/26 season, but a player tipped to become like Steven Gerrard could solve that issue.Wayne Rooney said earlier this season that midfield is a ‘big problem’ for the Reds, while Gerrard himself commented on the position being strengthened so Ryan Gravenberch can be pushed further forward. On that front, it has emerged that Liverpool are looking to sign Archie Gray from the relegation-threatened Tottenham Hotspur, and the Englishman has already been tipped to be like the Reds icon. With Arne Slot expected to stay, will Liverpool challenge for the Premier League next season?
Or will it be another difficult campaign? 😬 Photo Credit: Getty Images/Carl Recine Archie Gray could become a Steven Gerrard-type playerSpeaking on The View From The Lane podcast in July 2025, Tottenham journalist Dan Kilpatrick had high praise for the now Liverpool target, making a comparison to Gerrard. He said: “I think his best position is still a little bit up in the air. There’s a kind of assumption that, you know, he arrived here as a six and he was going to play deep.
“I’ve spoken to people that think he’s more of a kind of Gerrard type who could get up and down the pitch and kind of be a threat around the opposition goal.”The 20-year-old, who moved to Spurs from Leeds United in 2020, still has a long career ahead of him.But he has already cemented himself as a regular feature for the Lilywhites in what has been a difficult campaign for them.He has made 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring two and assisting three while playing in a number of positions.Gray’s versatility is invaluable, playing the majority of his career to date as a central midfielder and right-back, while also offering cover at centre-back.He is already an established England U21 international, and should he leave Tottenham in the summer, which is expected if they go down, it is surely only a matter of time before he gets minutes for the Three Lions’ senior team.Gray is one of the brightest young midfielders in England and would be a shrewd signing for Liverpool, especially if Spurs’ relegation allows them to get a deal done for a reduced fee.Join Our NewsletterReceive a digest of our best Liverpool content each week direct to your mailbox
