Ibrahima Konate has returned to Liverpool after suffering a new injury concern. Konate was called up for France’s latest round of World Cup qualifiers despite being forced off during last weekend’s Premier League defeat to Chelsea.
But Konate missed Les Bleus’ win over Azerbaijan on Friday with the quad injury picked up in west London and is already out for their next game against Iceland. A statement read: “Injured in the right quadriceps during his last match with Liverpool, Ibrahima Konate has followed a treatment and protocol since his arrival this Monday but will not be able to take his place against Iceland.” The centre-back is now a doubt for the Reds’ first post-international break fixture at home to Manchester United as Slot faces limited options to partner Virgil van Dijk.
Giovanni Leoni is already ruled out of the rest of the campaign while Joe Gomez’s availability has been regularly truncated by injury despite currently being fully fit. Slot has previously deployed midfielders Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo in the heart of defence but the former would shift the balance of Liverpool’s engine room.
