Liverpool could be in for a stern word from the Premier League following allegations that the club violated the multi-ball protocol on numerous occasions during Sunday's loss to Manchester United. During the match, ball assistants were seen throwing balls to Liverpool players when they went out of play, particularly after Harry Maguire scored to put United ahead 2-1 in the 84th minute.

The Premier League's guidance clearly states that "participants must not interfere with the multi-ball system, the match ball or the replacement balls at any time." Aston Villa found itself on the receiving end of a fine in mid-August after admitting to failing to adhere to the protocol in five matches last season. This included several instances where ball assistants handed the ball directly to the team's players.

As a result, Villa was also prohibited from using the multi-ball system in its first three home league matches of this season. It read: "Clubs are required to adopt a multi-ball system at every league match and adherence to the relevant rules and guidance is of vital importance to maintain consistency and, crucially, to ensure that home clubs do not gain a competitive advantage through their misuse of the system." According to the Daily Mail, it's expected that Liverpool will avoid a fine, with no known complaints made by United.
