SportFootballLiverpool FCA look at Rio Ngumoha's current situation at Liverpool after he became a full England international earlier this monthTwelve months ago, Rio Ngumoha was preparing for the biggest summer of his life. Set to be called up to Liverpool's pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Japan, the then 16-year-old was ready to grasp his opportunity with both hands.Stepping up from academy football to rub shoulders with players who were, at the time, Premier League champions was a significant stride, but Ngumoha handled it with the same aplomb he has shown during most other challenges in his fledgling career to date.An open training session at the JFA Dreamfield complex, in Tokyo, was the setting for Andy Robertson to look to assimilate the teenager further into the group by gently making fun of him during some of the rondos.

In typical Robertson style, it was a way of metaphorically putting an arm around his exciting young colleague, bringing him closer to his new team-mates as a result.Ngumoha then scored a beauty in a victory over Yokohama F Marinos before ending pre-season with his third goal of the summer, in a win over La Liga side Athletic at Anfield, which was an even more eye-catching strike, having earlier notched in a behind-closed-doors win over Stoke City. Many young hopefuls would have stopped there but the electric winger still had one final contribution before the summer was out.Ngumoha netted in the Premier League for the first time in dramatic circumstances, scoring the winning goal in the 100th minute at a white-hot St James' Park to defeat a Newcastle United side who had felt aggrieved by the Reds' summer-long pursuit of Alexander Isak. That goal, which came on a balmy Bank Holiday evening in late August, was only a couple of days before Ngumoha turned 17. Just days later he penned his first senior contract with the club he left Chelsea for in 2024.Nearly a year on, it was quite the summer for Liverpool's young player of the season. He ended the campaign starting on the left side of the attack for Arne Slot's side before being drafted into the England set-up on the eve of the World Cup.Ngumoha then became one of the youngest-ever debutants for the Three Lions at 17 years and 281 days, earning a player-of-the- match award in the process against New Zealand. His rapid progress comes at a time when Liverpool are changing their head coach and Ngumoha is being credited with interest from Bayern Munich, who had yet to make contact as of last week. The Reds are in no mood to negotiate with anyone over a potential sale, however, and with Andoni Iraola set to take the reins with a squad that is approaching a new era, Ngumoha has a vital part to play in the long term. However, playing devil's advocate or looking at things in a more cynical light, it certainly doesn't harm the rising star's case that interested parties, particularly clubs the size of Bayern Munich, have become public knowledge, especially if Liverpool have no appetite to enter into transfer talks.Last September, when he penned his first professional deal, Ngumoha was a young wannabe with talent and potential to become a first-team player at Anfield. In June of 2026, he is now an England star-in-the-making and perhaps the current situation warrants a suitable reward? The Reds might just have found themselves with a new contract priority.Paul GorstPaul Gorst is the Liverpool ECHO's Liverpool FC correspondent and brings readers the inside track on all matters Anfield day in, day out.
