Liverpool legend Kevin Keegan diagnosed with cancer
Liverpool icon and former England manager Kevin Keegan has been diagnosed with cancer after being admitted to hospital with ongoing abdominal symptoms. Tests revealed the disease, and the 74-year-old is now set to undergo treatment under the care of specialists.[1][2]
In a statement released by his family, Keegan was said to be grateful for the swift intervention and continuing support of the medical team. His relatives requested privacy while he focuses on his treatment and recovery, adding that they would not be making further public comment at this time.[1][2]
Keegan is revered as a Liverpool legend, having joined the club from Scunthorpe United in 1971 under Bill Shankly. During his time at Anfield he became a central figure in one of the club’s golden eras, winning three First Division titles, the FA Cup, two UEFA Cups and the 1977 European Cup before moving to Hamburg.[1][2]
At Hamburg, Keegan twice won the Ballon d’Or as European Footballer of the Year, further cementing his status as one of the leading players of his generation. He later returned to England to play for Southampton and Newcastle United before retiring from playing in 1984.[1][2]
Keegan also enjoyed a high-profile managerial career. He transformed Newcastle United in the 1990s, leading them into the Premier League and turning them into one of the most exciting attacking sides in the country. He later managed Fulham, England and Manchester City, before a brief, emotional return to Newcastle in 2008.[1][2]
The news of his diagnosis has prompted an outpouring of support from across the football world. Newcastle United shared the family statement and posted a message backing their former player and manager, while Liverpool FC and the club’s former players’ association also sent their best wishes to Keegan, his family and his friends as he begins his fight against cancer.[1][2]
