Kostas Tsimikas has been on loan at AS Roma this season after Liverpool contemplated recalling him in the January window. Image Credits: Imago ImagesKostas Tsimikas’ Liverpool career looked to be drifting away when he was sent on loan to Roma. The Greek defender has not been a regular in Italy, playing only a bit-part role across Serie A this season, and his spell in Rome has been more about staying sharp than truly establishing himself as first choice. As his loan heads towards its conclusion, Liverpool has had to decide whether his future still lies on Merseyside. That question briefly came into sharp focus in January, when Andy Robertson attracted serious interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
With Spurs exploring a move, Liverpool considered cutting Tsimikas’ loan short to protect themselves at left-back. However, Robertson’s move to North London never materialsed, and Tsimikas ended up staying put. Now, with the Scot having confirmed he is departing at the end of the season, and Milos Kerkez installed as the recognised first-choice, the future of Tsimikas has come back into focus. The Athletic has reported that Tsimikas is expected to be brought back into the Liverpool squad for the 2026/27 campaign, as a back-up to Kerkez:“Kostas Tsimikas is targeting pre-season as the period to force his way back into the Liverpool first-team squad,” Gregg Evans wrote.“The left-back returns to Merseyside when his loan at Roma expires at the end of the campaign and will be considered as part of next season’s plans following the exit of Andy Robertson.”“The Greek international has since played a bit-part role in Italy, but is set to have a chance to resurrect his Liverpool career with changes expected ahead of the 2026-27 season.”He has one year left on his contract, running until 2027, meaning he could leave on a free if no new deal is agreed before next summer.
For Liverpool, it is a low-risk way to bolster their depth at left-back while assessing whether he can still contribute at Premier League level under the new regime. The 29-year-old seems to understand he is returning as competition for Kerkez rather than as an automatic starter.
