But while some will still be nervous about their options going into the season, Frimpong showed during Sunday’s win over Como that he still could be the player Liverpool are looking for.Frimpong gives Liverpool what they need vs ComoInjury obviously played a part in preventing Frimpong from having the desired impact last season, and he ended up making only 12 starts in the Premier League. He looked out of rhythm and lacking in quality for plenty of those appearances, leading to many fans writing him off after only one year.READ MORE: Liverpool’s player ratings vs Como as Jeremy Jacquet steals the show in eye-catching debutPhoto by Lewis Storey/Getty ImagesBut though he is not a natural right-back, Frimpong deserves the chance to at least play regularly in a bid to turn things around.
On the basis of Sunday’s performance, he is ready to take it.There have already been positive moments during pre-season, his assist for Florian Wirtz against Leeds in Chicago being a prime example, but on Sunday he put in a 90-minute performance which suggested that a corner may have been turned. The numbers behind Frimpong’s top performanceThe key moment for Frimpong was his pass to set up Cody Gakpo for the game’s opening goal. Liverpool need that from their right-back.But Sunday’s game was also very good defensively from him, as he helped shut down some dangerous Como attacks.
There is still a long way to go before Frimpong will convince the majority of supporters that he can be a long-term option at right-back, but this was arguably his first performance in the position for Liverpool where fans can see the vision. If he can now take that into the season, right-back will not be an issue for Andoni Iraola this term.
