Liverpool Prepare Huge Bid for Top Defender

Liverpool are reportedly preparing a major bid to sign highly rated Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, as the club step up plans to reinforce their defence ahead of future campaigns.[2]

The Anfield hierarchy are said to view Jacquet as one of the most promising young defenders in Europe, with his blend of physical presence, composure on the ball and maturity beyond his years marking him out as a potential long-term pillar of their back line.[2] His performances in Ligue 1 have attracted growing interest from several top clubs, but Liverpool are described as being particularly determined to win the race for his signature.[2]

Liverpool’s recruitment team have reportedly monitored Jacquet extensively, impressed by his reading of the game, aerial ability and comfort playing in a high defensive line – all qualities that fit the profile demanded by the club’s current footballing structure and philosophy.[2] There is a belief within the club that he could be developed into a future defensive leader at Anfield.

Rennes are understood to be reluctant sellers and are in a strong negotiating position, which is why Liverpool are preparing what is described as a huge offer in an attempt to persuade the French side to part with their prized asset.[2] Any deal is expected to be complicated by competition from other clubs and by Rennes’ desire to maximise the fee for a player they rate extremely highly.

Even so, the report indicates that Liverpool remain very keen and are ready to act decisively to bring Jacquet to the Premier League, seeing him as a strategic signing who can anchor their defence for many years to come.[2]
