Frimpong is best suited to a wing-back role, which he excelled in at Bayer Leverkusen, but his defensive deficiencies leave him vulnerable when playing as a right-back.A former Premier League star has suggested that it might already be time for Frimpong to move on to pastures new, with Gaizka Mendieta advising Xabi Alonso to explore the possibility of reuniting with Frimpong at Chelsea.Alonso was the Bayer Leverkusen manager who Frimpong made his name under, as the pair helped Leverkusen to win the Bundesliga title in 2024.“Jeremie Frimpong could be a good asset for Xabi Alonso at Chelsea,” Mendieta said.

“Managers have players they trust from previous clubs and there will be a belief from the player that they can find that form again.“We often see players reuniting with former coaches for that reason, especially if things aren't going well for those players like Frimpong at Liverpool.“It’s a way of getting them back, to form hoping you can get the maximum out of the player and help you win things. I’m sure Chelsea will be active again in the market, they have to let players leave and bring new players in to suit the new coach.”(Image: Getty Images)However, while selling Frimpong for a decent fee might be tempting, it would also hand Liverpool an extra headache during a transfer window that the club already has plenty of priorities in.The Reds are already said to be looking at revamping their midfield, while replacements for Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate are high on the agenda. After spending so heavily last summer, Liverpool will have to cut its cloth accordingly this time around, and the prospect of adding a new right-back to the team's wishlist will not be a particularly tempting one for Liverpool's recruitment team. While a sale of Frimpong would undoubtedly help Conor Bradley's development, with the defender in line for more game time, it would come at a huge risk. One of Frimpong's best attributes is the fact he can play at either right back, right wing-back, or right wing.

The versatility he boasts is rare in modern football, and Liverpool would likely have to sign two players to replace him - a back-up winger and back-up right back.Bradley's own injury issues and Denzel Dumfries' move to Real Madrid on a free transfer already leave Liverpool in a precarious position at right-back, and irrespective of that, Frimpong deserves another season to prove himself on Merseyside – it would be harsh to get rid of him after just one year.
