Liverpool’s signing of Osasuna forward Victor Munoz means their attention has returned to Ivorian winger Yan Diomande, whose hefty price tag could increase during the World Cup. After recent signings have disappointed, here is why Liverpool should be wary of spending £100 million on potential alone.Diomande shines in World Cup openerThe Philadelphia Stadium hosted the Ivory Coast’s 1-0 victory in their World Cup opener against Ecuador, with a key matchup being Diomande, starting at right wing, and Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie. Both players enjoyed standout campaigns for their respective clubs, but it was Diomande who emerged as the victor, as his dazzling footwork and blistering pace left Hincapie red-faced at halftime.Cote D'Ivoire v Ecuador: Group E - FIFA World Cup 2026 | Darrian Traynor/GettyImagesLiverpool fans will have enjoyed the Ivorian’s display, and they would not be blamed for hedging their bets that he could well be the Mohamed Salah replacement they so desperately seek. However, the questionable metric of “World Cup goggles”, combined with the farcical nature of modern transfer inflation, means that sporting director Richard Hughes will have to tread carefully. Is Diomande worth a nine-figure sum?The RB Leipzig winger’s directness, versatility and speed immediately dismisses any notion that he is a luxury signing.Liverpool’s torrid season in front of goal has only exacerbated the clamor for a premier wide forward, as Salah reluctantly succumbed to age.Last season, Diomande registered 12 Bundesliga goals for Leipzig, just one behind leading goalscorer Christoph Baumgartner and 8 assists, with whom he is level with the Austrian playmaker. His previous season at La Liga side Leganes resulted in 3 goal contributions in 10 appearances, in what was only his first season at the senior level, aged 18.Out of the ten most expensive transfers of all time, four were teenagers: Kylian Mbappe (PSG); Ousmane Dembele (Barcelona); Joao Felix (Atletico Madrid) and Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid). To say that Bellingham was (and still is) the only signing that represented value for money, out of an exorbitant list, is certainly not unreasonable. While Diomande undoubtedly has the potential to be a mainstay in Liverpool’s team for over a decade, at age 19, his price tag makes him a huge gamble.

However, will Andoni Iraola’s proven track record of developing young players make it one worth taking?Future stars in safe hands with IraolaBournemouth’s record-breaking season was all the more impressive when taking into account the departure of several key players for massive transfer fees.Antoine Semenyo, Dean Huijsen, Ilya Zabarnyi and Liverpool’s Milos Kerkez all enjoyed at least one season under the tutelage of Iraola before taking the next step in their career. His astonishing record of developing young players will have been a key factor in bringing him to Anfield to replace Arne Slot, and in hindsight, working with Diomande should be no different.Wolverhampton Wanderers FC v AFC Bournemouth - Premier League | Robin Jones - AFC Bournemouth/GettyImagesThere will, of course, be a larger spotlight on both the player and head coach, as well as higher expectations, especially with a sizeable transfer fee. However, Iraola and Diomande working together would surely only spell good things for the Reds.Unlike Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, whose reputation preceded them before arriving at Anfield, Diomande’s lack of experience will make it easier for Iraola to get the best out of him. With Rio Ngumoha (17) and Victor Munoz (22) also among the ranks at a new-look Liverpool, competition for spots on the flank will be at its highest for almost a decade.VerdictThe transfer inflation that accompanies modern football is constantly evolving, as is the way in which a football player is valued nowadays.Data-driven analytics is more important than ever, taking precedence over the “eye test” that was deemed enough mere decades ago.No one knows that more than former Bournemouth sporting director Richard Hughes, who acquired Iraola from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano in 2023.It was a gamble to hire a manager with no Premier League experience to replace the popular Gary O’Neill, but Iraola has ensured it paid off in dividends.

The same logic should also be applied to Yan Diomande, whose age makes his potential transfer far from straightforward, but he possesses the ability to make his career a bona fide success.Liverpool will of course, consider alternative options, but if Diomande is their number one choice, why should they let a transfer fee stand in their way?Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow
