Liverpool's Borggrafe Serving Ban for Racist Remark
Published: January 16, 2026
Liverpool goalkeeper Rafaela Borggrafe has been handed a six-match ban by the Football Association (FA) following an investigation into a racist comment she made towards a teammate.
Head coach Gareth Taylor confirmed the sanction on Friday ahead of Liverpool's Women's Super League match against Tottenham Hotspur. Borggrafe, 25, has already served five games of the suspension and will be available for selection after this weekend's fixture.
The investigation began in September after allegations surfaced that the German goalkeeper used discriminatory language of a racial nature. Reports indicate the incident occurred during Liverpool's pre-season training camp in Cork, Ireland, while the squad was preparing for a team photograph.
"The FA has now completed its thorough investigation. They sanctioned the player with a six-game ban," Taylor told reporters. "That ban has been ongoing whilst we've been playing, so effectively she'll be out this weekend, but after that she is available."
Taylor expressed relief at the resolution, noting the process had dragged on and frustrated those involved, particularly Borggrafe. He emphasized that the club supported the FA's probe and has acted appropriately. Borggrafe accepted the charge weeks ago and must complete an education program.
Since joining Liverpool from Freiburg in July after over a decade there, Borggrafe has made three WSL appearances for the bottom-of-the-table side. Taylor highlighted the closure allows everyone to move forward.
The FA has yet to issue an official comment, but the ban underscores football's commitment to tackling discrimination.
