Liverpool’s former throw-in coach Thomas Gronnemark has joined Arsenal as a specialist consultant, nearly three years after his departure from Anfield, as Mikel Arteta looks for further marginal gains in the Premier League title race.[5]
Gronnemark, a Danish coach renowned globally for his work on throw-ins, previously spent five seasons with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool between 2018 and 2023, helping transform the team from one of the worst in the league under pressure to one of the best at retaining possession and using throw-ins as an attacking weapon.[1][3] His methods focus not only on long throws but also on “fast and clever” routines designed to exploit transition moments and create space all over the pitch.[3]
At Arsenal, Gronnemark has been brought in to improve an area where the Gunners have lagged behind some rivals, particularly compared with Brentford, another of his clients who have become the Premier League’s most effective long-throw side.[3][4] His arrival continues Arteta’s broader emphasis on set-pieces and specialist coaching, following previous appointments such as set-piece coach Nicolas Jover.[3][4]
The move is framed as part of Arsenal’s attempt to extract every possible advantage in a tight title race, adding throw-in expertise to an already strong set-piece unit.[1][4] Gronnemark has previously been critical of low-quality long throws in the Premier League, even naming Arsenal among the teams whose routines he felt were “chaotic,” and his new role in north London represents an effort to correct those shortcomings from the inside.[4]
While his work often goes unnoticed by casual observers, Gronnemark has argued that the volume of throw-ins in each match means even small improvements can have a significant cumulative impact on performance across a season, something Arsenal hope will translate into crucial points in the title run-in.[1][3][5]
