(Credit: Sky Sports) Mon 10 November 2025 14:29, UK Virgil van Dijk’s disallowed goal against Man City should have been allowed to stand as Andy Robertson was not impacting Gianluigi Donnarumma’s line of sight. That is according to Premier League legend Matt Le Tissier, who has exclusively told Football Insider that he feels the decision to rule out Liverpool‘s equaliser was unfair as the Man City goalkeeper was not going to save the header anyway.Man City beat Liverpool 3-0 on Sunday (9 November) afternoon, but things could have been different had Virgil Van Dijk‘s goal been allowed to stand to make it 1-1 in the first-half.Erling Haaland had put the hosts in front with a well-placed header before the incident, as Nico Gonzalez then doubled their lead just before the break and Jeremy Doku grabbed a fine goal in the second-half to complete a comfortable victory.Credit: ImagoVan Dijk equaliser ruled out due to Andy Robertson impacting Gianluigi DonnarummaLiverpool captain Van Dijk headed home from Mo Salah’s corner in the 38th minute but quickly saw his celebrations cut short as the assistant referee flagged for offside against Andy Robertson. The left-back was stood in an offside position as he ducked under the header, with VAR confirming the on-field decision of no goal after a review as he was adjudged to have impeded Gianluigi Donnarumma.Premier League’s Match Centre explained the decision on X by saying: “The referee’s call of offside and no goal to Liverpool was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Robertson in an offside position and deemed to be making an obvious action directly in front of the goalkeeper.“ MORE FOOTBALL INSIDER STORIES #MCILIV – 38’ The referee’s call of offside and no goal to Liverpool was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Robertson in an offside position and deemed to be making an obvious action directly in front of the goalkeeper.— Premier League Match Centre (@PLMatchCentre) November 9, 2025 View Tweet The call sparked a huge debate around whether Donnarumma was actually impacted by anything Robertson did, with former FIFA referee Keith Hackett telling Football Insider that Liverpool had a perfectly good goal ruled out against Man City.Le Tissier blasts Liverpool decision with Donnarumma unable to save header regardlessSpeaking exclusively to Football Insider, former England and Southampton striker Le Tissier voiced his opposition towards the decision to rule out Van Dijk’s header and insisted that the Man City keeper was not going to save it no matter what Robertson did.He said: “I thought it was really harsh, I really did. I think this rule where you’re in the goalkeeper’s line of sight and all that stuff, it’s all very well having that as a caveat in the ruling.
“But there also needs to be a caveat that, you know, if you look at that in a logical manner and go, ‘right, was the goalie going to get anywhere near it anyway, even if Andy Robertson hadn’t been there?’ “And, if you’re a reasonable judge, you can take a look at that and go, actually, it hasn’t really impacted on the goalkeeper. “He could see the ball all the way and he wasn’t going to get anywhere near it.
So, at that point, you’ve got to go, I’m sorry, but he hasn’t really impacted the play there.”
