Liverpool have had some seriously underrated players throughout recent history. The Reds really do have a star-studded team filled to the brim with some of Europe’s most exciting talents, with expectations now higher than ever. At Liverpool, previous managers have not been so fortunate, with the money that Liverpool previously spent being nowhere near the amount they parted ways with over the summer.Players were often brought in for far, far cheaper, which is something that fans would use to criticise their quality, but there is one player who cost just £12m who Michael Owen believes proved everyone wrong.Photo by Mike Hewitt/Getty ImagesJordan Henderson proved everyone at Liverpool wrongWhen he first arrived in 2011 from Sunderland, Liverpool fans were very underwhelmed by Jordan Henderson, with most believing he was just a bang average player. He took a little bit of time to adjust too which did not help his case, with the Englishman almost being sold just a year later as part of a swap deal for Clint Dempsey. However, Henderson was determined to prove himself and he did just that, going on to become captain and lead Liverpool to Premier League and Champions League titles.
He may still not get the credit he deserves today, but Owen believes he is just one in a long line of Reds players who went on to prove everyone wrong.“Everybody thought half the Liverpool team was rubbish 10 years ago. “They used to say, ‘Oh, James Milner is just a, you know, they bought Andy Robertson, a left back from Hull, never got a game.’READ MORE: Liverpool may have found an ‘outstanding’ player who can finally replace Virgil van Dijk“And then Klopp comes and all of a sudden anyone that signs now or for the last 10 years has been a success.
That’s not necessarily because of the player. It’s not necessarily because of the recruitment.”Jordan Henderson was criminally underrated Most people are happy to admit that Henderson is a great leader, but most are unwilling to give him any more credit than that. However, Liverpool fans know better than anyone that he was actually a really adept footballer too, with his ability in midfield something they might even be missing now.Not only did he work hard and have a phenomenal passing range, but he also broke up play nicely and filled in spaces that allowed the full-backs to push forward. He also had the odd screamer in him and certainly led by example, hence why he is one of the greatest captains the club have ever had.Henderson is still playing now at Brentford and has made a real impact since his arrival, with this perhaps another club where he will prove people wrong.
