The current Footballer of the Year was named on a six-strong shortlist for the BBC’S World Sport Star award for 2025.For those of a certain vintage, that is the award formerly known as the Overseas Sports Personality of the Year.

Having won individual accolades at the end of the 2024/25 football season and helped Liverpool complete the task of winning the Premier League (they were six points clear at the beginning of the year), that Salah should be in contention for such an award is understandable. But this is an award for 2025 and Salah has scored 18 goals for his club across all competitions in 2025. In more than one way, it has been a memorable year for Salah. He collected a Premier League winners medal, a Golden Boot, the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year award, the PFA Player of the Year award, a new contract, and has been ostracised.
