A change might just be as good as a rest for Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah this international break, writes Paul GorstPaul Gorst is the Liverpool ECHO's Liverpool FC correspondent and brings readers the inside track on all matters Anfield day in, day out. Now into his seventh season in the role, Paul follows the Reds home and away, wherever they play - including pre season.

He brings you all the latest Liverpool news first each day, plus exclusive interviews and insightful, independent analysis. A journalist with over a decade's worth of experience, he has worked at the ECHO since 2016.The next time Liverpool find that it's London Calling, they might be minded to let it go to voicemail.

Having tasted a first defeat of the season via Eddie Nketiah's 97th-minute strike at Crystal Palace, Arne Slot's men once more found themselves on the end of a 2-1 scoreline seven days later, courtesy of Estavao Willian's similarly late effort at Chelsea.Throw in a Champions League hiccup at Galatasaray and it's first time the Reds have lost three in a row since March 2023, when an ageing midfield was coming toward the end of its cycle under Jurgen Klopp. For Slot, though, the back-to-back league reverses may yet prove to be cosmetic only with the champions still only a point behind new leaders Arsenal at the top.READ MORE: Liverpool Alexis Mac Allister plan to change as Argentina fixture 'set to be relocated'READ MORE: Florian Wirtz is a fighter - he needs time in Liverpool's team of superstarsIn order to retain the title and nudge ahead of historic rivals Manchester United on to 21, however, the Reds boss will have to find a way to get Mohamed Salah purring once more, and a change might be as good as a rest where the peerless Egyptian is concerned on that front. It looked like the party continued long into the night in Casablanca for Salah and his Egypt colleagues after his double had fired them to next summer's World Cup on Wednesday evening. It was a famous night for Liverpool's superstar in Morocco as he scored twice against Djibouti to help seal a 3-0 victory and secure just a third appearance at a World Cup in the Pharaohs' history.Salah, of course, will be aiming for a more productive tournament than his 2018 appearance when, still hampered by a shoulder injury suffered by Sergio Ramos' judo-style takedown in the Champions League final a few weeks earlier, he was eliminated at the group stage when clearly unfit.Salah scored twice in Russia but was still blighted by the issue that ended his appearance early in Kiev, and it is something that no doubt still rankles with the uber-competitive attacker all these years on.So the 33-year-old will no doubt have something to prove at next summer's Stateside showpiece, but in order to ensure he reaches the US in optimum condition, an Anfield improvement will need to be forthcoming.Salah has looked as bereft of confidence as anyone in recent weeks and has just two league goals to his name so far this term, which came on the opening night against Bournemouth in mid-August and a last-gasp penalty against Burnley last month. At the same stage last year, he had five goals in the Premier League and while the dip in numbers is hardly enormous, the No.11 looks like he is having a tough time readjusting his own game to a new-look frontline that has seen Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez replaced with Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.Add in the £116m capture of Florian Wirtz and Salah may be forgiven for wondering where he fits in this changing landscape of Slot's frontline. It's why a starring role for Egypt could be so beneficial for Liverpool in the coming weeks. Of course, the former Chelsea man will come up against more imposing backlines than the Djibouti one he put to the sword at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, but the return to goalscoring form will only breed more confidence for a player who has yet to sparkle this time out.And perhaps more importantly, having got away from what was no doubt an unhappy, frustrated Reds camp after a chastening week of three successive defeats, the social media videos of a relaxed Salah celebrating with his international colleagues after securing their World Cup place clearly shows a side to him that hasn't been seen all too often of late.Salah will return to Merseyside next week as the new all-time leading scorer in African World Cup qualifiers (20), with his place on the plane for next summer's competition safe and secure. That could be just the sort of boost he needs to get firing, particularly given his 16 career goals against Manchester United, who are next up at Anfield.
