Fenerbahce are reportedly interested in signing Mohamed Salah as a free agent. Image Credits: Imago ImagesIt was a painful afternoon for Liverpool — and perhaps no one felt it more sharply than Mohamed Salah, who watched from the directors’ box as his side fell to a gut-wrenching 3-2 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Egyptian King, sidelined with a minor muscle injury sustained during the 3-1 win over Crystal Palace the week prior, could only look on as the Red Devil’s completed a league double over Liverpool. With Salah expected to leave Anfield at the end of the season, the image of him watching helplessly from the stands only added to the sense that this chapter is drawing to a close. And with his Anfield farewell fast approaching, the question of where Salah heads next is dominating the football world.

For much of the past two seasons, the assumption has been a blockbuster move to the Saudi Pro League. But Turkish side Fenerbahce have been showing interest, with claims from within the country that that club officials have already held meetings with Salah’s representatives. However, WinWin Sport have today instead reported that move to Fenerbahçe is now viewed as very unlikely from both sides. The current Fenerbahçe hierarchy is nearing the end of its mandate and is not expected to stand in the upcoming presidential elections, which means they are reluctant to commit to a huge deal like Salah. The last contact with the player’s camp was around 10 days ago, and club sources reportedly admit that his salary demands would be extremely difficult to meet.Egyptian journalist Ismail Mahmoud adds:“As for Mohamed Salah’s position, he greatly appreciates Turkish football and its fans, but it seems that the option of moving to Fenerbahce is unlikely at the moment, and he has not decided anything about his future and his next destination, in light of reports linking him to a move to the Saudi and American leagues or a return to Italy.”Despite his injury, Liverpool have confirmed that the 33-year-old is expected to play again before the season ends.
