Liverpool are set to be impacted by FIFA’s new proposed squad ruling. World football’s governing body has put forward a motion that will require clubs to field at least one homegrown under-21 on the pitch at all times.
The consultation was approved by a FIFA Council meeting in Vancouver on Tuesday with next steps to see key stakeholders now consulted for feedback.. That is in stark contrast to some of their domestic peers with Manchester City and Newcastle United meeting the planned ruling for the current campaign.
FIFA’s proposal is part of attempts to improve youth development but would come under scrutiny due to statutes in leagues including the English top flight. A FIFA statement confirmed: “The FIFA Council unanimously approved a consultation process with all relevant stakeholders for a regulatory obligation that senior club teams are obliged to always have at least one homegrown player from the U20 or U21 category on the field of play, and for the proposal to be submitted to the FIFA Council in the next year.”
