A key update has emerged regarding the future of Joe Gomez at Liverpool, with a move away in the January transfer window mooted. The centre-back is struggling for playing time for Liverpool, however, featuring for just 43 minutes in the Premier League this season, and he is out of contract at Anfield in 2027.
Will this be Gomez’s last season at Liverpool? Gomez will no doubt be tempted to enjoy a fresh challenge next summer, especially given his squad status at Liverpool, and the Reds may also be willing to cash in on him before losing him on a free transfer the following year.
That said, he appears to be a player that Slot still values as a strong squad option, with the Reds’ head coach hailing the “special” quality that exists in his game: “He always makes sure he is ready whenever the club or his teammates need him, and that is special when it comes to his mentality because not many players can do this for so many years that he has done this. But last season he played many, many, many games – I think you could call him a starter that season – and in some other seasons maybe he was more of the second choice in every other position in the last line.” Purely from a financial perspective, Liverpool should consider moving Gomez on at the end of this season, in terms of receiving a fee for him, but keeping him until his contract expires would also be no bad thing.
