James’ future has never been in doubt, however – the Chelsea captain is arguably their most important player.Reece JamesPremier League 2025-26Appearances26Goals2Assists4Chances created23Tackles47Duels won107With superb ability to put the ball into the box, and a tendency to step up in the big moments, James is often the man looked to when the Blues need a moment of magic. Rosenior has even moved the defender into midfield of late, adopting an idea Maresca had flirted with earlier in the season. The Athletic reported on Friday that James has now put pen to paper on his new deal, which will extend his stay at Chelsea until 2032.The new agreement will bring his financial rewards into the “incentivised wage structure” adopted by Chelsea under their owners. The new system sees a lower base wage paid – reportedly worth, on average in the squad, around £60,000 per week – while bigger bonuses for individual and team achievements are included.Where James can rank for Chelsea appearancesIn nearly seven seasons, James has racked up 225 appearances for Chelsea – a number that has been significantly hampered by injury.Time will prevent the defender from getting anywhere near the 795 appearances record-holder Ron Harris made for the Blues, but he can certainly get on the list.Kerry Dixon’s 420 appearances are the 10th most in Chelsea history.

Should James want to take that record, he would need to make an average of 32 appearances across the next six seasons. That would also see his pass Steve Clarke, although he would need to average a huge 45 if he were to surpass 7th-placed Petr Cech. 🦁 Don’t Miss a Beat: Your Chelsea Insider Access Get the full story from Stamford Bridge and Cobham with our dedicated expert hubs: Updated 24/7 with expert analysis from West London.
