Liverpool have long been linked with a move for former player Xabi Alonso after questions over Arne Slot’s future. However, a fresh update from Fabrizio Romano this week played down Alonso links and mentioned Slot is being backed, saying that ‘Arne Slot has always received support from the owners and from the club. So that remains the case.

At the moment, Slot is not receiving any message about the possibility of being fired at the end of the season’.As for Alonso, he could now potentially find himself at Stamford Bridge once the 2026/27 season gets underway. With Arne Slot expected to stay, will Liverpool challenge for the Premier League next season?

Or will it be another difficult campaign? 😬 Photo Credit: Getty Images/Carl Recine Xabi Alonso and another manager linked to Liverpool eyed by ChelseaThe Spaniard has been out of work since he left Real Madrid at the beginning of 2026.Los Blancos have had a poor campaign by their standards, being knocked out of the Champions League and are set to lose out on La Liga to FC Barcelona despite changing coaches.Prior to returning to his home country, Alonso excelled in Germany and won the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen with Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong in his squad. However, there does not look set to be a reunion at Anfield this summer and instead, Liverpool could miss out on the manager to a rival. The Telegraph reported that ‘Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva and Xabi Alonso are among the managers Chelsea will make checks’.Iraola has been linked to Liverpool as well after it was confirmed he would be leaving Bournemouth at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.‘Contact with representatives’ of all three aforementioned names is set to be made, and if Alonso or Iraola are chosen to take up the mantle in West London, Liverpool will miss out on one potential replacement for Slot. This is the risk FSG run if, as they are currently expected to do, stick with the Dutchman going into 2026/27.Results have improved in recent weeks, but fans still aren’t happy with Slot and how their team are playing right now.Hopefully, he is able to turn things around following a good pre-season and a few summer additions. But right now, it feels like Liverpool are simply delaying the inevitable, and when it comes to making a managerial change in the first half of 2026/27, they will have missed out on a lot of the notable names like Alonso and Iraola.Join Our NewsletterReceive a digest of our best Liverpool content each week direct to your mailbox
