Liverpool’s midfield has looked a shadow of the department which led them to a Premier League title last season.Arne Slot often deployed the same three of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai as the Reds romped to the championship.Gravenberch has been largely excellent as ever this time around, but with Szoboszlai needed at right-back and Mac Allister struggling for sharpness, Liverpool look like they need something extra. In the meantime, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is continuing to go from strength to strength.Liverpool have been linked with a move for Wharton, who has been right at the heart of a terrific start to the campaign for Palace. And as the race heats up to sign one of English football’s most prodigious talents, Liverpool could soon be able to take advantage of a potential release clause. The England international is said to be valued ‘in the £75m bracket,’ and Liverpool are said to hold a ‘keen interest’ in acquiring him.The Reds are not the only named admirers, however, with Man City and Chelsea also supposedly in the race, while Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Tottenham are also mentioned to various degrees. In terms of Wharton himself, he is said to remain happy at Selhurst Park, but is aware that he is coming to a crucial time in his contract. How much would the release clause be?Although Palace are said to value Wharton at around £75m, there is no mention here of exactly how much any potential release clause could be valued at.The Eagles did something similar with Eberechi Eze, eventually selling him to Arsenal for somewhere around the £60m mark.Given his age, quality and potential, it is very likely that Wharton’s figure would be even higher. For Liverpool, this could make plenty of sense, but it would also likely need one of their current midfield options to depart. There is little chance of Liverpool spending such a fee on a player coming in as a back-up, and given we cannot see exactly where Wharton fits in, we have a suspicion that those wanting to England man at Anfield are going to be left disappointed.
