Liverpool are expected to have a busy summer transfer window, with a couple of key stars needing to be replaced. With both Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson set to end their Reds careers this summer, fresh legs on the wing and at left-back are surely set to be targeted.Potential replacements for Hugo Ekitike could also be looked at after the Frenchman suffered a long-term injury. But one area that is not expected to be strengthened in the upcoming 2026 summer transfer window is right-back.

You can only pick ONE player for Liverpool to sign this summer, who is it? Who should Richard Hughes be targeting above all… Photo Credit: Getty Images/Robin Jones Liverpool won’t focus on signing a right-backSince Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid last year, Arne Slot has struggled to replace the Englishman. In 2025/26, all of Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo have been used in that role at some point in the season. However, Szoboszlai, Jones and Endo are all midfielders, while Bradley is another long-term absentee, and Frimpong has also suffered from persistent fitness issues.Amid no obvious choice to replace Trent long term, Jamie Carragher said this week that Liverpool need a right-back, and the Dutch summer signing should instead become a right-winger permanently in 2026/27.He stated: “Jeremie Frimpong has done all right actually.

But for me, I think Frimpong should be the back-up right-winger to the one that we buy in the summer. And I think Conor Bradley can fight with a new right-back that comes in.”However, Carragher’s wish looks set to be ignored as The Athletic now reports that ‘signing another right-back isn’t seen as a priority’ by Liverpool. It appears to be a change in stance from those in a position of power at Anfield, given that Lutsharel Geertruida was targeted late in the 2026 winter transfer window. There has also been a suggestion that Gomez will leave this year, which would further deplete Slot’s options at right-back.But with money likely being set aside to replace Salah and Robertson, it seems the Reds are going to persist with their current options for the time being.Join Our NewsletterReceive a digest of our best Liverpool content each week direct to your mailbox
