Liverpool’s midfield has looked worlds apart from what it was last season and some new recruits might be needed. The Reds have encountered many problems at the start of the new season, but the biggest concern will be how open they are defensively.Liverpool have let in nine goals in the league already, with the balance of the team something that Arne Slot has not managed to get right just yet.One reason for this could be because of the midfield, with the Dutchman’s options still not firing on all cylinders. This has led to transfer rumours starting to circulate, with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton a name that keeps being linked.

However, Manchester United seem to think that they can get to him first, with the Red Devils readying an offer.Photo by Crystal Pix/MB Media/Getty ImagesManchester United are preparing an offer for Adam WhartonWharton has impressed ever since he made the step up to the Premier League and he really will be the most sought-after midfielder in England if he carries on the way he is playing. He is an excellent holding midfielder who makes the lives of those around him much easier, although his performances may sometimes go under the radar. Not to the big clubs, though, as many of them are keen on his signature, with Manchester United looking to make an early move.According to The Mirror, Man United are preparing a £60m offer for the 21-year-old, with the club believing this will be enough to tempt Palace to sell.Ruben Amorim is keen to strengthen their midfield and sees Wharton as the best person to help do this, although many other teams are expected to join the race.READ MORE: Dominik Szoboszlai has just shown how Liverpool can get the best out of Milos Kerkez£60m also seems rather cheap given his talent, hence why Palace want to include a release clause into his new deal, with this expected to be north of £75m.Where does Adam Wharton fit into Liverpool’s team? There is no denying Wharton’s quality and that he would walk into almost any team in the league, but it is hard to see where he fits into Liverpool’s.Ryan Gravenberch is one of the best in his position in Europe, meaning that Wharton would be very unlikely to dislodge the Dutchman in the starting XI.They could move Gravenberch further forward, back to where he used to play, but that means only one of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister or Florian Wirtz can make up the midfield three.A re-jig would be needed and some big calls would have to be made for this deal to happen, but spending at least £75m on a back-up does not seem like something Liverpool would do.So yes, fans are right to be excited by the prospect of him coming in, but they could be disappointed, either as he does not join due to the options they already have or because one of their favourites might have to be sold to make room.
