Republic of Ireland International Officially Joins Liverpool in Club Record Transfer

Liverpool FC Women have completed the signing of Republic of Ireland midfielder Denise O'Sullivan from North Carolina Courage in a permanent transfer, subject to international clearance. The 31-year-old joins as a club-record signing amid the Reds' efforts to bolster their squad in the competitive Women's Super League (WSL), where they currently sit bottom without a win in 12 matches.[1][2][4][5]

O'Sullivan, who spent nine years with the Courage in the NWSL, leaves as the club's all-time appearance leader with 186 games. She captained the team from 2023, winning two NWSL Championships (2018, 2019), three NWSL Shields, and two Challenge Cups (2022, 2023).[1][2][3][4][5]

A Republic of Ireland international with 128 caps—making her the second-most-capped player behind Emma Byrne—O'Sullivan featured in Ireland's debut at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. Her career also includes stints at Cork City, Peamount United, Glasgow City (three league titles), Houston Dash, and a 2020 loan at Brighton & Hove Albion in the WSL.[2][3][4]

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, O'Sullivan expressed excitement: “It means a lot. It’s a very proud moment for myself and also for my family, who are now only a 40-minute flight away. Liverpool is a massive club... I can’t wait to get to work and to give 100 per cent every day. I want to help this team... have an impact from the first minute.”[1][3][4]

Liverpool manager Matt Beard praised her leadership, work rate, passing, and tactical intelligence, expecting an immediate boost to midfield depth alongside recent loan signing Martha Thomas from Tottenham.[2][5]

The move returns O'Sullivan to Europe, bringing experience vital for Liverpool's push up the WSL standings in one of the world's strongest women's leagues.[1][2]
