Republic of Ireland's O'Sullivan Signs for Liverpool
Liverpool FC Women have completed the permanent signing of Republic of Ireland midfielder Denise O'Sullivan, subject to international clearance, marking a major boost for the struggling WSL side.[3]
The 31-year-old Cork native, who spent nine years with North Carolina Courage in the NWSL, has left the US club despite having a year remaining on her 2024 contract extension.[1][4] O'Sullivan, a club captain and key fixture for the Courage—who finished ninth in 2025 and missed playoffs by one point—brings vast experience, including loans to Brighton (2020) and Canberra United (2018-19).[1][4]
Liverpool, currently bottom of the WSL table after 11 winless games, desperately need reinforcements to escape relegation.[1][2] O'Sullivan's leadership, tactical intelligence, work rate, and "genius soccer IQ" are expected to transform the team under manager Gareth Taylor.[2][4][5] She joins compatriot Leanne Kiernan at Anfield, with the WSL resuming January 10, 2026, and Liverpool hosting London City Lionesses the next day.[1]
The move is both professional and personal for O'Sullivan, who debuted for Ireland at 17 in 2011 and has been a heartbeat of the national team.[2][4] After nearly a decade in America—where she won titles and honed her elite skills—proximity to family ends years of sacrifices like missing occasions and long-distance friendships.[1][2] It also aids post-career plans, opening Irish sponsorships and media opportunities.[2]
O'Sullivan expressed delight at the signing, highlighting "massive potential" at Liverpool and vowing to give 100%.[5] Previously linked to Manchester United, this Atlantic return fulfills her desire to play closer to home while competing at the top level.[1]
