Sporting director Richard Hughes has felt that pressure as much as anyone.Brought in during 2024 on the back of impressive work at Bournemouth, Hughes was tasked with steering Liverpool through the post-Jurgen Klopp transition. He arrived on Merseyside with a glowing reputation, having spent years building Bournemouth into a stable Premier League outfit on a fraction of the budgets enjoyed by their top-flight rivals. The Premier League title that arrived last season papered over plenty of cracks, but the drop-off this term has put his recruitment record under the microscope and the criticism has steadily grown louder. While there has been consistent links away from Liverpool, UK reporting including from the Telegraph have asserted he will be staying put until at least his contract expiry in 2027.But the rumour mill is continuing to spin, with a big claim now coming out of Italy.According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal are “about to announce” Hughes as their new sporting director. The Italian outlet ran a major interview with Al-Hilal manager Simone Inzaghi on Thursday, suggesting the information appears to have come directly from the former Inter Milan boss himself.Gazzetta state that the 46-year-old is expected to link up with Inzaghi in the coming weeks, with a meeting between the pair pencilled in shortly.Al-Hilal looks like they will fail to win the Saudi Pro League title this season, which has turned the upcoming window into a defining one for Inzaghi and the club’s recruitment team.Hughes has a contract running at Liverpool until 2027. While there has been plenty of reports that Hughes will be moving and nothing has happened quite yet, there is rarely smoke without fire.
