Sky Germany Provides Latest Update on Julian Ryerson and Liverpool
Liverpool faces a mounting injury crisis that could force action in the January transfer window, particularly after defender Conor Bradley was ruled out for the season with a knee injury sustained in the 0-0 draw against Arsenal.[1][2]
The Reds are short-staffed in defense and attack. Centre-back Geovanni Leoni is sidelined long-term with an ACL injury, Mohamed Salah is at the Africa Cup of Nations, and £125m signing Alexander Isak is injured. Hugo Ekitike recently returned from a minor issue, featuring in the 4-1 FA Cup win over Barnsley.[1]
Borussia Dortmund's Julian Ryerson, a 28-year-old versatile defender (right-back, left-back, centre-back), has been linked with Anfield. In excellent form with six assists in 22 appearances this season, the Norwegian is an undisputed starter at Dortmund.[1][2]
However, Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg reports Liverpool are not currently targeting Ryerson. He stated on X: “Understand Liverpool are urgently searching for a replacement for Conor #Bradley... Various options are being assessed... ❌ Been told that Julian Ryerson is currently not a candidate for #LFC. #BVB.”[1][2][3]
Internally, Joe Gomez can cover right-back, with Jeremie Frimpong as another option despite his recent injury return. Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones could fill in, but that impacts midfield depth. Gomez's chronic fitness issues raise concerns if more injuries hit.[1][2]
Barcelona have also been linked with Ryerson, who has four assists in 15 Bundesliga games. Liverpool are assessing alternatives amid the crisis, though a right-back signing in January seems unlikely.[2][4]
