(Credit: Getty Images, Imago) Sun 12 October 2025 9:20, UK Rangers’ search for a new manager is ongoing after the latest twist in their bid to replace Russell Martin following his dismissal last week.Martin was sacked following Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Falkirk, meaning he won just one of his seven league games in charge at Ibrox in a dismal start to the season.Rangers had already begun assessing alternatives to Martin, with a number of their candidates being assessed including some of those they snubbed in the summer.Football Insider revealed on 6 October that Rangers had four managerial candidates on their list, with Steven Gerrard, Sean Dyche, Danny Rohl and Kevin Muscat the contenders.Among those, Rohl now appears to be the standout candidate alongside Hearts manager Derek McInnes, with both Dyche and Gerrard now out of the running.Credit: ImagoRangers assessing new managers after Steven Gerrard snubReports on 11 October reported that Gerrard had turned down a return to Ibrox despite nearing an agreement to make a sensational comeback at his former club. This came after Football Insider reported that Rangers had held positive talks with Gerrard and looked set to push forward and reach a full agreement. “He’ll need to be convinced that it’s the right project for him, that the ambitions of Rangers match with him as well, because he won’t take anything lightly in these talks.“There’s been other names mentioned, the likes of Derek McInnes, but it’ll be hard to price him away from Hearts, having had a great start to the life at Tynecastle. He’s free and available to work should they move forward with him.“Gerrard did seem to be the top target for Rangers, but if those talks are falling through, they want to be prepared and have others they are looking at.”This comes after claims that the Rangers board were wowed by Rohl, who was also in the running for the job before Martin’s appointment during the summer.Danny Rohl hotly tipped to become Rangers managerFormer Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 6 October that Rohl is open to taking the Rangers job despite having missed out previously. While he is one of a number of contenders for the vacant position, Brown explained that the former Hillsborough boss is very highly-rated by the Rangers hierarchy.Rohl has been out of a job since leaving Sheffield Wednesday during the summer as a result of the ongoing uncertainty under Dejphon Chansiri‘s ownership.Andrew Cavenagh has a big decision to make at Ibrox. (Credit Imago)Brown first told Football Insider in May that Rohl was interested in the Rangers job as he prepared to quit Sheffield Wednesday, but he ultimately missed out to Martin.Another positive for the former Wednesday boss should he take the job, is that Rohl is a big fan of Djeidi Gassama, who has enjoyed a strong start to his Rangers career. For more Rangers and exclusive news, follow us on Facebook or join our brand new WhatsApp Channel for instant updates to be sent straight to your phone.
