The former Gers manager is set to have preliminary talks with the club's new American owners in London this week, possibly as early as Thursday. However, sources close to the Ibrox legend maintain that these will simply be the initial 'exploratory' steps in a process that could still take some time to finalise. This week's initial meeting, which is not yet at the formal interview stage, has been arranged to give the 45-year-old a better understanding of the new Gers hierarchy following the club's US takeover.
That said, it is understood that he is now prepared to at least meet and listen to what Gers chiefs have to say.The ex-England captain's first tenure with the club began in 2018 when he was appointed by then chairman Dave King, who led a board primarily made up of affluent lifelong supporters of the club. When South Africa-based businessman King stepped down as the Covid pandemic hit, Douglas Park took over as Gerrard's line manager and was at the helm as the manager guided Gers to their 2021 league title. However, the motor group tycoon was left to shoulder much of the blame for the penny-pinching approach that ultimately led Gerrard to depart later that year. The club's landscape has drastically changed since then, with a US consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and his partners at the San Francisco 49ers now steering the ship.Gerrard is reportedly set to hold talks with Rangers chiefs this week (Image: GETTY)Cavenagh is at the forefront of the revamped board, with 49ers Enterprises executive and Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe serving as his deputy. The day-to-day operations of the club, however, have been entrusted to beleaguered chief executive Patrick Stewart and scrutinised sporting director Kevin Thelwell.Gerrard will now seek clarity on each individual's roles and responsibilities before assessing whether his methods can align with the new structure. He will also request an overview of backroom operations at Auchenhowie, given the significant staff changes that have occurred in the four years since he left to manage at Villa Park. This week's preliminary talks are not anticipated to cover crucial issues such as the composition of any potential backroom staff or future transfer funds. However, they appear far more substantial than the fleeting discussions that took place over the summer before Rangers committed to their ill-fated move for Russell Martin.Ibrox bosses have compiled a shortlist featuring several potential candidates, but it's still too early to confirm if Gerrard is the front-runner, given the assurances he would require if he were to leave his life in Bahrain, where his family continues to live following his stint managing Saudi side Al Ettifaq. There are also tax hurdles to overcome, but Rangers supporters have already made it clear to the board that the man who guided their team to an unbeaten league title just four years ago is their overwhelming first choice to clean up the mess left by Martin.
