Liverpool are particularly at fault for building a squad in recent times where homegrown players make up a fraction of their starting lineups in the Premier League. Whilst Liverpool are hitting their number for homegrown players, it is clear that they are not sticking to the model that the rule was implemented for in the first place as half of the players listed above are unlikely to make consistent appearances for the Reds.

Going into this summer, Liverpool could face more issues. The Athletic have reported as a result that if all of these players were to depart, that “Liverpool would have to find sex replacements, two of those being either homegrown or under the age of 21.” Finding proven homegrown talent that can compete for a starting spot in the squad is not easy, and Liverpool will have their work cut out for them this summer if they sanction too many departures.
