Ian Doyle with the Liverpool talking points after the club's Under-21 side were beaten 2-0 at Crewe Alexandra in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday eveningLiverpool's transfer business in the summer of 2022 won't go down as a vintage window. Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Ben Doak have already departed for pastures new, while the less said about the loan spell of Arthur Melo the better. There was, though, another newcomer who has long been forgotten by supporters - Calvin Ramsay, who joined from Aberdeen for an initial £4million.The right-back has made just two appearances for Liverpool's first team, the most recent of which is approaching three years ago now.

And, after a string of disappointing loan spells, Ramsay is now in the process of restarting his career.READ MORE: Liverpool transfers rated as FSG recruitment scrutinised after £1.5billion spendREAD MORE: Liverpool under-21 ratings as Trent Kone-Doherty shines and 17-year-old duo make stepStill only 22, he was the captain here at the Mornflake Stadium against a Crewe Alexandra side who are just outside the play-off places in League Two.Ramsay spent spells of the first half primarily pressing forward and created a chance for teenage striker Josh Sonni-Lambie.But it was his short back-pass that forced goalkeeper Fabian Mrozek to make a challenge the referee extremely contentiously adjudged a foul for Emre Tezgel to put Crewe into an 11th-minute lead.Trent flows againSimilar to Ramsay, the opening months of this season will be regarded by both Kaide Gordon and Rhys Williams as a chance to get much-needed regular minutes under their belts, while eyeing a potential loan move in January.Gordon was neat and tidy in the first half, although snatched at one chance, but began to prosper when given a more free role at the start of the second half and was among those to test Crewe goalkeeper Sam Waller. He did, though, miss a great opening for a consolation in the 89th minute. But not for the first time this campaign, Liverpool's greatest threat throughout came from Trent Kone-Doherty, who had featured for the Republic of Ireland U21s at the weekend. The 19-year-old caused constant problems down the left flank, striking the post with one shot and drawing a save with another.

Having made his senior debut in the FA Cup defeat at Plymouth Argyle, Kone-Doherty could also benefit from a loan sooner rather than later.Williams, meanwhile, was steady enough, although Crewe's second goal came from Dion Rankine getting in between himself and left-back Lucas Pitt before lifting the ball over Mrozek.Spearing saluteThere can't be many footballers who have appeared for their club's Legends team at the weekend before turning out for the U21s a few days later.Jay Spearing, though, has long made cameos in the EFL Trophy his forte, and was influential during his first-half stint here in helping Liverpool dominate possession and create sufficient chances to not have gone in two goals behind.Ben Trueman, who replaced Spearing for the second half, added energy into midfield where Tommy Pilling, playing in the advanced role, caught the eye in the first half in particular.Liverpool enjoyed almost 70% possession but with strikers Jayden Danns and Will Wright both injured, they lacked more experience at the top end.But it gave a chance to Sonni-Lambie and another 17-year-old, winger Joe Bradshaw, to enjoy their first taste of competitive action at this level. The Reds conclude their group stage at Chesterfield next month and still have an outside chance of progressing to the knockout stages.
