Trent Alexander-Arnold’s is now facing a fresh challenge in Spain after Real Madrid opted to trigger Denzel Dumfries’ €25 million release clause on his Inter Milan contractTrent Alexander-Arnold is facing new competition for his starting role with Real Madrid(Image: Getty Images)Trent Alexander-Arnold is suddenly facing competition for his starting spot on Real Madrid after a new right-back completed his move to Bernabeu.Alexander-Arnold’s first season at Real Madrid hardly went according to plan, with the Spanish media harshly declaring that he hasn’t “lived up to expectations.” During his injury-riddled 2025-26 campaign, he registered just five assists while being limited to 30 appearances and 1,794 minutes across all competitions. In light of Alexander-Arnold’s struggles, Real Madrid opted to trigger Denzel Dumfries’ €25 million ($29.1 million) release clause on his contract with Inter Milan, per Fabrizio Romano. Though the Dutch defender’s deal ran until 2028, the Italian club was open to negotiating his cost-effective departure.Dumfries immediately slots in as a replacement to veteran Dani Carvajal, with the six-time Champions League winner set to leave once his contract expires on June 30.
But the 30-year-old could soon threaten to claim Alexander-Arnold’s place in the starting XI thanks to his towering physical presence and better defensive instincts.Over 30 appearances this season, Dumfries amassed five goals and two assists across 28 appearances. The Netherlands international achieved no shortage of success during his tenure with Inter, winning Serie A twice and the Coppa Italia thrice while additionally helping propel The Black and Blues to the Champions League final in 2023 and 2025.To add insult to injury, Alexander-Arnold was left off Thomas Tuchel's England World Cup squad, with no other Real Madrid full-backs receiving the call for their countries ahead of the quadrennial tournament.Real Madrid triggered Denzel Dumfries’ release clause in his Inter Milan contract(Image: Getty Images)Left-backs Fran Garcia and Alvaro Carreras, as well as center-back Dean Huijsen, were all left off Spain's squad, while Ferland Mendy was omitted from France's team. With Dumfries now in the mix, it appears as though Alexander-Arnold is getting his wish for a “new challenge” he outlined upon informing Liverpool of his decision to leave.“I think first and foremost, I want to say it’s not an easy decision and there’s a lot of thought and feeling that has gone into it,” Alexander-Arnold explained last May.“I’ve been here 20 years now, loved every single minute of it, achieved all my dreams, achieved everything I’ve ever wanted to here.“Giving everything day in, day out for 20 years, I’ve got to a point now where I feel like I need a change, a new challenge for me as a player and as a person. And I think now is the right time for me to do that.”Fortunately for Alexander-Arnold, it seems as though he will soon be reunited with a former teammate in Ibrahima Konate, who’s reportedly closing in on a four-year agreement with Real Madrid. While the 27-year-old was initially engaged in talks with Liverpool to remain in Anfield via an extension, those negotiations ultimately stalled out, leading him to look elsewhere.
