Valencia are considering an early decision on Liverpool loanee Harvey Elliott ahead of the January transfer window Harvey Elliott joined Valencia on a season-long loan from Liverpool at the end of the summer transfer window. The agreement does not include an option to buy, while the midfielder remains under contract at Anfield until 2028.Elliott had been left out of Liverpool’s matchday squads for the first two Premier League games under head coach Andoni Iraola before securing his move to Spain. However, his start at Valencia has been difficult. In September, Marca reported that the 22-year-old had arrived “out of shape” and “well overweight for his physique” following an “atypical pre-season”.The newspaper claimed Elliott had three weeks to improve his condition.
Valencia also changed managers shortly after his arrival, with Carlos Corberan dismissed and Javier Aguirre appointed as his replacement.Elliott made his sixth appearance for the Spanish side on 24 October, coming off the bench in a 2-1 home defeat to Villarreal. His evening ended in disappointment as he received two yellow cards in quick succession, the second for dissent, and was sent off in the 89th minute. It was the first red card of his career.
The Liverpool loanee subsequently apologised in a message on Instagram.“I made a mistake and I’m truly sorry,” he wrote.Aguirre described the dismissal as “absurd, ridiculous” and pointed out that Elliott barely speaks Spanish. The midfielder will miss Valencia’s trip to Elche on 1 November and is expected to return for the home meeting with Real Madrid on 7 November. The latest setback has added to the uncertainty surrounding his future at the club.Speaking to the Mail, Valencia expert Julian Burgos, who covers the team for AS, suggested the Spanish side could look to end the loan agreement early.“Honestly, if the option to terminate the loan arises, Valencia will likely pursue it,” Burgos said.“With a new sporting director and manager – compounded by the team’s poor form – it seems they will look to undo many of the moves made by the previous sporting director.“They need to free up space within the salary cap to make changes to the squad, so they will likely take any opportunity to cut ties with players brought in under the previous regime.”Burgos described Elliott as “a significant disappointment” but acknowledged that the midfielder has been working hard in recent weeks and appears to be in better physical condition. The 23-year-old has yet to start a La Liga match, managing 152 minutes across six appearances without scoring or providing an assist. Valencia are currently 19th in the table.Support DaveOCKOP and enjoy the site completely ad-free.
