Liverpool Echo IconNewsLiverpool NewsAnfieldResidents in Anfield woke up to see part of their road had been vandalisedPeople living on a street in Anfield have woken up to see that part of their street has been vandalised. A total disgrace and something that people living on that street shouldn't have to deal with. It's something that everyone should be angered about but there are some people who will see this as a good thing and a way of gaining traction on social media. Why?

Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure angered a lot of Liverpool fans and towards the end of the title-winning season many voiced their opinion over how he left the club. For the record, I am in the camp that those at Anfield should let Alexander-Arnold know how they feel about the nature of his departure and I hope Real Madrid has a terrible night this evening. At the time, I wasn't disappointed about him leaving the club, but more around how he handled it.On the morning of Real Madrid's visit to Anfield, social media posts showed that Trent Alexander-Arnold's mural near Anfield had been vandalised. The words "rat", "adios" and "not welcome" were sprayed onto the side of a house where the mural is.Great news for those seeking likes, shares and social media interaction. It's the age we live in.But vandalising a mural is unnecessary and completely the wrong way to express how you feel about him leaving Liverpool for Madrid. The reason behind the mural should be enough for people to know that it shouldn't be vandalised.

Whether he should be replaced on the mural is a different argument.Images taken today by the ECHO show workers cleaning up the graffiti that was left on the mural on Sybil Street.Back in May, following the announcement of Alexander Arnold's departure, the ECHO reported that there were no plans to remove or replace the mural. The mural was commissioned in 2019 by the Liverpool podcast The Anfield Wrap and painted by French artist Akse to commemorate the defender's role in the 2019 Champions League win.It includes the quote, "I'm just a normal lad from Liverpool whose dream has just come true," and a tribute to the community initiative Fans Supporting Foodbanks.Fans are well within their right to vocally express their opinions on the former Liverpool player's departure and return to Anfield, but going into a community and vandalising a part of a street over a footballer is not how it should be done. The work to clean up the graffiti is now underway and what happened overnight shouldn't be repeated. Those involved need to take a hard look at themselves following the incident. He then joined the Liverpool ECHO's digital team.
