Prior to pre-season beginning, most Liverpool fans were likely in the camp of hoping that Curtis Jones would stay at the club where he blossomed from the academy.However, Jones‘ behaviour during the summer has left a lot to be desired, with some fans disappointed by his initial meeting of Andoni Iraola – refusing to take his sunglasses off despite meeting the new boss indoors – and the high-profile on-pitch spat with Dominik Szoboszlai over the captain’s armband.On Wednesday, it was reported that Inter Milan are prepared to pay €35m for the Scouser, and with Liverpool now looking likely to let him leave, it feels like best for all parties that Jones does move on. Not a single legitimate link to a midfielder has been seen for months now, suggesting that Liverpool are happy to move forward with what they have.Trey Nyoni is the Jones replacementAlthough Jones has been a fringe player at Liverpool, he has still played significant minutes over recent seasons.The 25-year-old played 49 times during 2025/26 – a career high – and while he was not a regular starter for Arne Slot, he still began 18 of his 34 Premier League appearances. Reds react after hearing ‘crazy’ PSG asking priceWhile fans will want a new signing to make up for those minutes, though, Liverpool seem to have a lot of faith in Trey Nyoni stepping up to play a bigger role.Clearly, the 19-year-old is not going to play 50 times next season, but he will surely improve on his 14 appearances in 2025/26, and it would not be a surprise to see him at least double it.Nyoni has been excellent during pre-season, and looks absolutely ready to take at least a portion of Jones’ minutes.Stefan Bajcetic is also steadily returning, and if he can get fit – and stay fit – for the autumn/winter time, the Spaniard can also pick up some of the slack. Liverpool do have options – and potentially top quality ones at that.Iraola’s tactical switch sees less need for another midfielderIf fans aren’t convinced by the rise of Nyoni – and potentially Bajcetic – to cover for Jones, that would be understandable.However, it should also be noted that Iraola’s tweaking of Liverpool’s midfield means there should be less minutes for a fourth-choice option anyway.Photo by KAMIL KRZACZYNSKI / AFP via Getty ImagesWith the Basque looking likely to deploy two sitting midfielders behind Florian Wirtz as part of his best XI, one of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai will be sitting out more often than not.Mac Allister will probably begin the season as the odd man out, and although he has rightly had his critics of late, the Argentine is more than good enough to match Jones’ role in the squad.There will obviously be times when Wirtz does not play, which could lead to Iraola playing all three midfielders, but it would be a surprise if this happened 18 times, which is the number of games Jones started last term.Add in the fact that there does not really seem to be a midfielder out there on the market who Liverpool are bowled over by and ready to move on, and it just makes sense for them to wait another year and see what’s going on with Nyoni and Mac Allister in particular next summer.It would not be a popular choice for Liverpool to hold fire if Jones does leave, but though there will likely be some links to a midfielder or two put out there, it is very possible that the Reds in fact do nothing at all.
