Philippe Coutinho made a return to England this week having been a free agent since February this year. Image Credits: Imago ImagesFew players carry the kind of nostalgic weight in English football that Philippe Coutinho does. The Brazilian magician lit up the Premier League during his time at Liverpool, becoming one of the most gifted players to grace Anfield before his dream move to Barcelona in 2018.Since then, his career has taken him on a winding road – from Spain to Germany, back to England with Aston Villa, and eventually home to Brazil with Vasco da Gama. His homecoming to Brazil did not end as planned however, with the former Liverpool man having left Vasco citing fan pressure and exhaustion in February. For many fans, it felt like the last chapter of his English story had already been written.
But football has a funny way of surprising you.Coutinho was spotted arriving at the Stadium of Light on Monday, with footage of the former Liverpool star walking through Sunderland’s ground piquing interest. The reason for his appearance? He joined Ronaldinho’s side for the highly anticipated Ronaldinho & Friends vs UK Icons charity match – a star-studded exhibition event organised at the Stadium of Light, with Brazilian legend Ronaldinho leading a team of world football icons against a UK Icons XI captained by former Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe.Ronaldinho’s star-studded squad included fellow Brazilian greats such as Gilberto Silva, Maicon, and Douglas Costa, with Nwankwo Kanu and ex-Sunderland forward Djibril Cisse also involved.Team Defoe on the UK Icons side had a strong Sunderland flavour, featuring club legends like Kevin Phillips and Lee Cattermole alongside former Premier League names including Aaron Lennon and Shaun Wright-Phillips.On the night, Ronaldinho & Friends ran out 3-1 winners over Defoe’s UK Icons. For Coutinho, this night in Sunderland felt more like a celebration than a relaunch – a chance to share a dressing room with old friends and simply enjoy his football again.
What comes next is still unclear for the now 33-year-old.
