However, the Egyptian’s farewell tour was thrown into doubt after the forward was forced off with an injury during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace last weekend.

The club have since confirmed that Salah will recover before Liverpool’s last game of the season, but Slot confirmed that Sunday’s visit to Old Trafford will come too soon for the 33-year-old. ‘He is always working incredibly hard during the season when he is fit and when he is injured to get back as soon as possible,’ the Dutchman said in Friday’s pre-match press conference. ‘Usually he is back earlier fit than other players. He has a minor injury and we expect and need him back for the final part of the season, but not for Sunday. ‘It is a big relief that his injury is minor and he is able to play for us and at the World Cup.

The Reds’ goalkeeper has missed their last seven games after picking up a muscular injury against Galatasaray. ‘He hasn’t trained with us yet but is very close to. We will hear today from the medical staff if he can train today. ‘He is very close, but we, of course, also do not want to take any risks because that is never what you do with a player and that’s also not what we do.’ And a late decision will also be made on left-back Milos Kerkez after he pulled out of training on Wednesday. ‘Milos [Kerkez] has had some niggles and left the training pitch on Wednesday,’ Slot added. ‘I expect him to train today or tomorrow.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page.
