Xabi Alonso won admirers across European football and established himself as one of the most highly sought-after young managers in the game through his outstanding work at Bayer Leverkusen. I would expect one or two to come in. They think that will be crucial and once they have come in, that’s when you can perhaps judge Arne Slot more fairly.
Liverpool will look to do more work in the transfer market.”Chelsea are exploring a deal to appoint Alonso as their next head coach, with the Spaniard open to the move but no final decision made as the process continues.Alonso is one of the leading candidates to replace Liam Rosenior, alongside Andoni Iraola, who is also strongly in contention after leaving Bournemouth. The 44-year-old has been out of management since being dismissed by Real Madrid on January 12, where he was replaced by reserve team coach Alvaro Arbeloa. His tenure ended after a mixed spell despite a strong start, including 10 wins in his first 11 league matches and a Supercopa de España final appearance, though Madrid were second in La Liga at the time of his departure. Before that, Alonso enjoyed major success with Bayer Leverkusen, leading them to an unbeaten domestic season and their first-ever Bundesliga title in 2023–24, as well as reaching the UEFA Europa League final. As a player, Alonso spent five years at Madrid, winning multiple trophies including the UEFA Champions League, after joining from Liverpool, where he also won the Champions League in 2005 during his Premier League spell.
