Michael Regan/Getty Images Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has told Andoni Iraola that he must start midfielder Trey Nyoni against Brentford this weekend, on the back of a fine performance against LASK Linz. The midfielder initially joined Liverpool’s Under-18s, but his impressive performances earned him a first-team debut under then manager Jurgen Klopp in the FA Cup in February 2024.

The 19-year-old made his European debut for the Reds by coming on as a substitute in the Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven, making him the club’s youngest player to make an appearance in Europe. Nyoni played 85 minutes in Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Austrian side LASK Linz on Wednesday, helping the Reds secure a 6-3 victory.

Thompson said on LFC TV (14th October, 19:53): “He’s got to start…Yes, I think he has done well enough.” Thompson further highlighted Nyoni’s height as a potential advantage in his development. The former defender praised the Liverpool star’s performance in the first half, insisting that the midfielder completely controlled the game.
