This leaves the path clear for Liverpool to pursue Amorim, who is on track to lead Sporting CP to its second league title in just four full seasons under his management.

Other names such as Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi and ex-Bayern Munich and Germany coach Hansi Flick have also been linked with the job.

However, following Barcelona's disastrous Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain, Sport reports that Márquez is ready and waiting to take over from Xavi.

Despite the Barca board's attempts to persuade Xavi to reconsider his decision, he reaffirmed his stance after Tuesday's 4-1 defeat in the second leg.
