Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing striker Darwin Nunez from Liverpool in the summer transfer window.
Nunez has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most divisive figures since his arrival at Liverpool from Benfica nearly two years ago.
While boasting a respectable record of 33 goals and 17 assists in 92 matches for the Reds, he has been the subject of criticism for his profligacy and apparent lack of clinical finishing.
His recent performance in Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat to Merseyside rivals Everton has intensified the scrutiny, with Nunez failing to capitalize on several opportunities in a loss that could deal a significant blow to his team’s title aspirations.
It was reported by the Times that Jurgen Klopp has been a staunch supporter of Nunez, and his departure this summer will result in the Uruguayan losing one of his most ardent advocates at the club.
During Liverpool’s pursuit of a new forward in the summer of 2022, the club’s “recruitment think-tank” favoured signing France international Nkunku.
However, Klopp advocated for Nunez instead, ultimately securing his transfer for an initial fee of £64 million, which could potentially rise to £85 million if certain add-ons are achieved.
Nunez showcased his abilities against Liverpool during the Champions League quarter-final with Benfica in the latter stages of the 2021/22 season.
Despite Benfica’s defeat on aggregate, he impressed by scoring twice during the tie, contributing to a thrilling encounter that ended with Liverpool progressing 6-4 on aggregate.
This season, the 24-year-old has scored 18 goals and provided 13 assists in 50 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions.
His performance for Klopp’s side has caught the attention of Barcelona who exited the Champions League at the quarter-final by Paris Saint-Germain.
According to Spanish media outlet Elpais, Barcelona have targeted Nunez as Xavi seeks to bolster the attack this summer with the future of Joao Félix uncertain.
Félix joined Barca on a season-long loan deal from Atletico Madrid last summer and could return to his parent club at the end of the season.
The Portuguese forward has racked up 39 appearances, netted 10 goals, and registered six assists in all competitions.
