Darwin Nunez was guilty of missing a guilt-edged chance in Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat to Everton on Wednesday night.

In the second half of the clash, when the Reds were desperate to get back in the game, Nunez chose to strike a shot straight at Jordan Pickford despite the goal mouth gaping.

For all the chaos that the Uruguayan brings, it seems he cannot direct that energy into scoring goals on a consistent basis.

Indeed, Nunez has only managed 7 league goals since November.

This is a worrying return for a striker that costed a potential £85m with all add-ons included.

In Premier League games this season, Nunez has scored 11 goals, which is simply not enough for a No.9 on a team trying to win the title.

The Uruguayan has missed 26 big chances in the Premier League this season, while only scoring 11 [BBC].

He is only behind Erling Haaland’s 30 big chances missed, but critically, the Norwegian has 20 goals scored.

This means that Darwin Nunez has the worst big chance conversion rate in the entire topflight at just 20%.

Jamie Carragher seems to have lost patience with the Uruguayan after the game, saying:

“In terms of Núñez and the club going forward.”

I think after two years, I don’t think there’ll be a massive improvement in him.”

“I don’t think he’s enough to win you the biggest trophies.”

And now reports from the Telegraph suggest Nunez’ position at the club is not exactly secure ahead of next season.

Darwin Nunez under the microscope

Chris Bascombe of the Telegraph has release a piece today in the aftermath of the Merseyside derby defeat.

As mentioned, Darwin Nunez missed a guilt-edged chance that could have got Liverpool back in the game.

The report details that Jurgen Klopp is the 24-year-old’s ‘biggest ally’, and that things could change when the German departs the club.

Bascombe writes:

“When Klopp leaves this summer, Nunez loses his biggest ally.”

“Incoming FSG football supremo Michael Edwards and Sporting Director Richard Hughes are entitled to look coldly upon the Uruguayan’s contribution knowing he was not signed on their watch.”

“Suspicions have long circulated that had Edwards not left in the summer of 2022, there would have been a robust internal debate as to whether so much should have been invested in a striker who looked like a work in progress from his first training session.”

It is then said that Richard Hughes and the new manager will have to assess Nunez to determine whether he has a future at Anfield still after seemingly been unable to address his issues in front of goal.

Nunez always gives his utmost effort and commits fully; he’s truly an athlete, with incredible bursts of speed and excellent positional sense.

However, he lacks key attributes in front of goal such as composure and finishing.

Unfortunately for him, a striker is predominately judged on goals, and he has just not produced enough of them in the Premier League this season.
