Naby Keita’s time at Werder Bremen has gone from bad to worse this season.

The Guinea international left Liverpool at the end of the 2022/23 campaign having largely struggled to replicate the performances that made Liverpool spend a reported £53 million for his services back in 2018.

It is reasonable to argue that Klopp and Liverpool would not have purchased the Guinea international for that amount of money if they could go back in time.

Keita made 129 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 11 goals and 7 assists in all competitions in that time period.

The 29-year-old had a difficult time playing at Anfield due to injuries, and in his last season, he only made 13 appearances for Liverpool.

At Werder Bremen, his injury problems that plagued him at Anfield seem to have followed him to the Bundesliga.

Despite being the club’s highest earner, Keita has managed a paltry 5 appearances across the entire season.

It’s fair to say that Werder Bremen would have steered well clear of the midfielder with the benefit of hindsight.

But things took a turn for the worst on the weekend, with Werder Bremen playing against the now-Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.

In the build-up to the clash, it emerged that Naby Keita declined to join his teammates ahead of their match against the runaway champions.

Bremen director Clemens Fritz said: “After Naby found out yesterday that he would not be playing from the start, he decided not to get on the bus but to go home.

“We will talk to him and his agent tomorrow about the consequences and how to proceed.”

Since then, Keita has refuted the claims that he declined to play in the match against Xabi Alonso’s squad, who went on to win the Bundesliga title in an unforgettable fashion.

But it seems Keita’s pleas have fallen on deaf ears judging by Werder Bremen’s reaction.

Werder Bremen suspend Naby Keita

The Bundesliga club have released a club statement declaring that Keita is now suspending from all first team operations, including matches and training.

A Bremen club statement reads:

“Werder Bremen have suspended Naby Keïta until the end of the season.”

“In addition, the green and whites have imposed a significant fine on the midfielder.”

“From now on, the 28-year-old will neither train with the team nor be in the dressing room of the first team.”

“Naby Keïta did not travel with the team to Leverkusen on Saturday after learning that he would not be in the starting line-up for the Bundesliga match at Bayer Leverkusen, but had decided to go home and stay away from the game.”

Bremen director Clemens Fritz added on the matter:

“Naby’s behaviour is intolerable for us as a club.

Therefore, there was no alternative to our measures.”

Naby Keita adds to a growing list of Liverpool players who see their career enter into a freefall after bidding farewell to Anfield.
