Jamie Carragher suggests that Liverpool faced a challenging task in finding a successor of Jurgen Klopp’s calibre and believes that the current era favours “up-and-coming” managers.
The Reds are set to appoint Arne Slot as Klopp’s successor, with the club having reached an agreement with Feyenoord regarding compensation.
Klopp is set to depart at the end of the season after a highly successful nine-year tenure at Anfield.
Slot emerged as a contender for the managerial position, especially after Xabi Alonso opted to remain at Bayer Leverkusen for the 2024/25 season, while Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim was also linked with the role.
Slot has been at the helm of Feyenoord since 2021, and last season he steered the club to its first Eredivisie title since 2017, finishing seven points ahead of PSV Eindhoven.
Although trailing PSV by nine points this term, the 45-year-old recently guided the Rotterdam outfit to Dutch Cup success with a 1-0 victory over NEC Nijmegen.
Jamie Carragher sees Slot’s appointment as indicative of the evolving managerial landscape, suggesting that the days of readily available established winners like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte are no longer as common for teams seeking to build long-term success.
“My choice would have been Xabi Alonso,” said Carragher on CBS Sports’ coverage of the Champions League on Tuesday via Liverpool Echo.
“I don’t think right now, we’re in an era of managers of the past, big names.
“You think of [Jose] Mourinho, [Antonio] Conte, big names.
Those managers aren’t there.
“I think we’re in an era now of up-and-coming managers.
Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP and Arne Slot of Feyenoord were the two names [linked with Liverpool].
“Most Liverpool fans who go to the match wouldn’t have really known who that man from Feyenoord [Slot] is.
“It’s not like bringing in Rafa Benitez, like when I was there, or Jurgen Klopp – who people were aware of?
“But I think that’s just the place we find ourselves in right now.”
