Liverpool may have banished their Brentford hoodoo with a first victory at the Gtech Community Stadium last month, but the fixture proved damaging in other respects.

Mohamed Salah made his comeback from a month out injured by contributing a goal and an assist but ultimately aggravated the problem and wasn't seen again for another three weeks.

Diogo Jota hasn't played since being substituted for Salah shortly before half-time having suffered knee ligament damage, while Darwin Nunez, who opened the scoring in the 4-1 triumph with a superb finish, failed to reappear for the second half and missed the following weekend's League Cup final win over Chelsea.

Then there was Curtis Jones, the first player to fall on the afternoon for Liverpool when suffering an ankle problem barely half-an-hour into the game.

Ryan Gravenberch, his replacement from the bench, had a hand in one goal and started the win over Luton Town a few days later before his Wembley outing was cut short after just 28 minutes with an ankle injury.

It was a significant blow for Jones, who had regained his regular starting role after a fractured opening half to the season in which two spells on the sidelines through injury and a suspension following his contentious red card at Tottenham Hotspur had seen him fall down the pecking order.

Only Virgil van Dijk has a better pass completion rate for Liverpool this season in the Premier League.

Now, though, Jones is close to a return.

And he will hope to play as significant part during the run-in as last season, when his unexpected return to the side on the left of the midfield triumvirate allowed Liverpool's new-look formation with an inverted full-back - usually Trent Alexander-Arnold - to fully prosper.

That may not be quite so straightforward, The absence of Jones has allowed Alexis Mac Allister into what is quickly becoming his best position on the left of the engine room, particularly with Wataru Endo operating as the number six.

The three had started twice together before the injury to Jones, with Mac Allister slightly subdued on the right side.

The recent return of Dominik Szoboszlai and the consistently impressive form of Harvey Elliott mean a role on the right isn't a given either, although Jones has long shown not only an appetite to scrap for his place but an ability to keep hold of it once acquired.

Gravenberch, meanwhile, was back on the bench for the FA Cup quarter-final defeat at Manchester United a fortnight ago and will be in contention against Brighton.

Only five times have they started together and only once in the Premier League - the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal in February.

It may be a surprise for some to discover the Dutchman has made 31 appearances for Liverpool this season - three more than Jones - starting 18 times.
