Liverpool at their brilliant best in convincing win over Leicester

In winning Liverpool set another club record.

Depleted, without three-quarters of their back four and a host of other players, they swept aside Leicester who started the weekend in first place and had won away at Manchester City, Arsenal and Leeds United already this campaign and are rightly considered among the contenders.

But Liverpool deserved their advantage.

Wave after wave of Liverpool attack continued as Mane’s drive was parried by Schmeichel before being scrambled away but he was finally beaten again when Firmino steered a firm header from a corner past the Leicester captain to finally claim his goal.

It is now 64 league games unbeaten at home; one more than the previous best which ended in January 1981 – with a defeat to Leicester.

They could not win at Anfield, however, with Jurgen Klopp flexing the strength of his squad and with, again, Diogo Jota impressing, as he became the first player in the club’s history to score in his first four home games, along with Curtis Jones and the metronomically consistent Sadio Mane and Andrew Robertson, who was simply relentless.

For all the talk of an open Premier League title race and despite the fact they only sit second in the table Liverpool are emphatically the team to beat this season especially when they produce stunning performances like this.
