News that Xabi Alonso is unlikely to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager as he looks set to remain at Bayer Leverkusen has seemingly turned the managerial search on its head.

Alonso has rose to the fore after transforming Leverkusen from a relegation-threatened side to sitting 10 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

The ECHO understands that the Reds are of the belief that Alonso is planning on staying at Leverkusen for at least another season, leaving the club to move onto other candidates.

Since Klopp's shock announcement in January, Alonso emerged as the hotly-tipped favourite while Ruben Amorim and Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi were linked.

Since then, the likes of Thomas Frank, Gareth Southgate and Steven Gerrard have received glowing referrals to succeed the former Mainz and Borussia Dortmund boss.

The 56-year-old still has 10 league games left in charge, as well as their Europa League push, as they sit second in the Premier League on goal difference.

Klopp could sign off on his nine-year spell with a famous treble, having secured the Carabao Cup with February's win over Chelsea.

Since the news that Alonso is unlikely to feature on Liverpool's final shortlist, the bookmakers have adjusted their odds on the next Liverpool manager with a new favourite emerging.
